2015 SAUL BELL DESIGN AWARD WINNERS

Enamel

The predominant surface material must be glass-based enamels and may be fired on any type of metal.

First Place
"Streaming Turquoise"
Jennifer Park
Budd Lake, NJ, USA

Artist Statement: "Streaming Turquoise" consists of cloisonné enamel set in 22K gold with turquoise and diamonds. The "stream" in this piece represents a sacred, protected path enclosed in an expanse of matte black enamel. The high-karat gold, elaborate granulation and diamonds are evocative of religious splendor.

Second Place
"Empress Theodora"
Sandra McEwen
Raleigh, NC, USA

Artist Statement: Theodora started out life as a circus performer, but through the force of her own personality became one of the most influential and powerful empresses of the byzantine empire. I wanted to make a necklace that represented both sides of her story—the whimsy and the grandeur.
