Now in its second decade, the Saul Bell Design Award competition invites you to challenge yourself. Stretch your boundaries. Overcome limitations. Push your most innovative ideas into the spotlight. Inspire us all.

Registration for 2014 Saul Bell Design Award Competition will open June 2013.

participants

We invite members of the jewelry or hollowware community and students of a jewelry or hollowware program to embrace the challenge—take part in the 14th annual Saul Bell Design Award Competition. Employees of Rio Grande or of any affiliate or participating company (and their immediate family members) may not participate.

judging criteria

Our esteemed panel of judges is comprised of a broad spectrum of respected jewelry artists and designers. Submissions are judged on the following criteria:
  • The innovation and uniqueness of the design.
  • The successful incorporation of media into the design.
  • The wearability of the piece (except hollowware/art objects) as adornment.
  • The quality of workmanship (for final judging).

how to enter

You may submit as many entries as you wish, although only one finalist per category is possible.

To Enter Online

You can register online at www.saulbellaward.com/callforentries. Follow the online instructions, submit your 10MB image, and for an optional $35 fee (in addition to the $50 entry fee), Rio will print and mount an 8-1/2" x 11" photo for preliminary judging.

To Enter by Mail
You can also fill out the 2014 Saul Bell Design Award Entry Form, submit your image (maximum size of 10MB), and for an optional $35 fee (in addition to the $50 entry fee), Rio will print and mount an 8-1/2" x 11" photo for preliminary judging. You can also fill out the form on the back of this brochure and supply one rendering* or photograph (at least 4" x 6") mounted on a white matte board (must be either 8” x 10” or 8-1/2" x 11"). Please keep a copy of your rendering or photograph; submissions will not be returned. Do not send finished pieces unless asked to do so by Rio Grande. Submissions which do not meet entry criteria may be disqualified. Send each rendering or photograph with a copy of the entry form (one per entry) and a $50 entry fee (per entry) to:
Rio Grande
7500 Bluewater Road NW
Albuquerque, New Mexico 87121-1962
Attention: Design Competition
* Please Note: If a photograph of the finished piece is also available, please provide both a rendering and a photograph. If providing a rendering only, please include detailed instructions about your planned fabrication method (including joint construction, assembly processes and materials) with your submission. Keep in mind that renderings will be judged along with photographs; the quality of either is very important.

Choose one of the categories as the foundation of your piece, and integrate any additional stones or materials you wish into your design. Submitted pieces must be wearable jewelry (except in the hollowware/art objects category) and must be composed of at least 75% of the material specified in the chosen category. The piece may not have won an award in any other competition prior to entry submission.
